Time took to complete: 9hrs:23mins:21secs on Medium
First of all, I would say, play on Hard! I wish I had. On Medium by the
end I wouldn't call this a survivor or a horror game. I had an epic suit
(levelled all the way up to 5), great weapon (once you level the plasma
cutter up a bit, you don't need anything else) so really I had no
reason to be intimidated after 3-4 chapters. And those early chapters go
easy on you. Some developer said, can't remember who "you can't make
the player feel invincible and still scare them." and that's definitely
the case here, I wasn't caring if 20 enemies jumped around the corner, I
blasted those fools with my plasma cutter.
The game itself is still great fun. Great atmosphere and one of those
stories you put together yourself via the bits and the pieces. It kept
me going to put the pieces together. The level design is fantastic as
well, not your typical "go down a dark corridor" design, nice variety of
sections with hidden rooms, some you unlock by giving away a 'node'
(thing you use to level up weapons/suit).
The anti-gravity bits! Freakin' awesome. This was the scariest part for
me, as you get disorientated so don't know where enemies are and trying
to get your bearings while under attack was a good heart pumper.
There is good variety in level navigation with traps, some puzzles,
using your stasis to navigate around and gameplay throws a couple of
curveballs too that surprises you in a good way. Including two very fun
mini-games.
So I really enjoyed my adventure here, only downside was the game was
too generous with difficulty but I am not going to take away too much
for that, I should have started on Hard- Something I will do for Dead
Space 2.
Dead Space 1 kept me hooked for hours (spent the whole Saturday playing
it) and had little to no annoyances/design flaws to get in the way of
the fun/atmosphere.
9/10.
